Goldfish Migration To Bigger Tank?

  • I’m in the process of moving my 4 fancy goldfish from a 40 gallon tank to a 75 gallon tank. I’ve completed the initial planning steps of identifying the location of the tank along with the specific tank and aquarium stand as well as determining various plants, substrate, and objects/decorations for the set up. I plan to run 2 identical canister filters each rated at 65 gallons at a flow rate of 250 gph. To prepare for this I added a second identical canister filter to the 40 gallon tank last week. After a brief bacteria bloom the water is clear and the second filter appears to be integrated with the tanks ecosystem. Water measurements are ammonia 0, nitrite 0, and nitrate 20 ppm. This I understand will allow me to ‘clone’ the cycle from the old tank to the new tank. In about a month I plan to complete the set up of the new 75 gallon tank. Then I will start moving the canister filters and the 4 goldfish to the new tank. My goal is to avoid any ammonia spike facilitating a bacterial or fungus problem that might occur as a result of doing this in the wrong sequence or too quickly. I determined the first step to be the move of one canister filter along with the last step which would be moving the second canister filter and the fourth fish to complete the migration process. In between those I am not certain about when to transfer the fish, how long to wait between each fish, etc. What sequence and timing would you recommend that would be optimal for the four goldfish? Should I move the fish one at a time, all at once, or in groups of two? And how many days should I schedule between each move? Thx.

Yep, that is how you do that! I would move the oldest filter to the new tank first. add 1 or 2 fish at a time, maybe over 1-2 days float the fish in bags before adding them. Add some stresscoat product after adding them.

wow. you really are putting lots of thought in that. move them one at a time. the gives that bacteria more time to adjust to the amount of waste. good move!
