How to reduce memory usage per virtual server?

How to reduce Firefox memory usage?

  • Hello, I was optimizing my pc once again (I tend to do this often) and I decided to check my processes in Task Manager and how much they use. I noticed Firefox uses quite a lot of memory: even when I'm on a blank page (about:blank) it still uses 60.000-70.000 kb, at the moment of typing this (only Yahoo Answers open) it's using 115.000 kb, and when I have multiple tabs open it can sometimes raise to 200.000-300.000 kb. I find this being pretty high, I'm not sure if this is normal for a browser or if there's a way to reduce it somehow? Also, side question, if you can answer this one too thanks a bunch - I noticed my explorer.exe also using up 70.000kb or more at times. Again, is this normal or can I reduce it somehow? I'm a gamer and I like to have as much memory and hard disk space available at all times, so that's why I decided to cleanup and check out my processes again. I still find Firefox the nicest browser to use overall (nice design etc) so I'll stick with it. It might be a browser using more memory than others, but I still find it climbing up to 300.000 kb at times really abnormal. Is there really no way to fix this? Also as stated in my original question, can I reduce explorer.exe memory usage? Most people I know say theirs only use like 20.000 kb while mine uses 70.000 kb or more at times.

  • Answer:

I don't know if you've thought to check this, but is your operating system 64-bit? if it is (as is mine) then running Firefox, or the regular 32-bit Internet Explorer, or even Google chrome will use a lot of memory. I don't know if Firefox does this as I use Google chrome, but in chrome each tab is its own, separate process. This makes it more stable and faster, at the cost of more resources. Firefox is also compared to other browsers a big memory user. Its fairly normal.
