Tax deduction for Legal Fees?

What is the tax deduction on car licensing fees?

  • I totally forgot I leased a car last year and have already submitted my taxes. They've already been accepted, I can't change it, but I looked at my lease and I paid about $300 in licensing fees when I leased the car here in California. Is it worth trying to redo them now? Should I just amend next year? How much do people actually get back from those licensing fees?

  • Answer:

You can't declare 2011 expenses on your 2012 tax return. If you want to declare them you must amend your 2011 return. If you can do the amended return yourself, it pays. You'll get the refund on the deduction and it won't cost you anything. Maybe you'll get $45 back for Federal and something on the state. Worth it? Good luck.
