Whats the difference between a soldering iron and a wood burner?

  • i have a wood burner that is used to burn wood and art and it looks just like a soldering iron. whats the difference? can i use a wood designer as a soldering iron to melt metals together? i have an ho scale train set and the pieces are better soldered together when put in a model town layout (that im building) i need a soldering iron to melt the tracks together with a roll of solder. would it be a dumb idea to use a wood burner instead? can i ruin it? and whats the difference? they look about the same...

    === using the wrong tools does not get the job done properly ...... go and buy a good soldering gun,, those new models have built in work lights and will heat near instantly .... the wood-B iron will not last long and then you gotta go and replace the wood-B iron and you will still need a good soldering iron..

I was using my wife's wood burner last night to desolder a battery connection in my old shaver. Short answer: no functional difference. Any solder left on the tip can be buffed off with a little emery cloth.

The tips on a wood burner are designed to burn wood, not melt solder and withstand the corrosiveness of the flux in the solder. If you really need to solder something and a wood burner is all you have, it would probably work. But, you'll ruin the tips after a while.
