What is the difference between a shelf cloud and a wall cloud?

How far down from the ceiling should a full wall display shelf be hung?

  • I found prefab 34.5" shelves at Hobby Lobby, 4 of them together are exactly the length of a wall I want to hang them on end to end so they look like a built in shelf. I want to hang them fairly high, so I wanted to know is 18' - 20" down from the ceiling a good height? I want them high enough to be out of the way still low enough to view what's on them. Any suggestions would be helpful. I intend to paint them the same color as the wall to help them look built in.

Hi deb, Absolutely perfect with your suggestion of a recommended height. One minor factor is to consider what you are displaying on the top shelf and if that measurement allows you enough room for display. Liked the idea you have very Much for the ez built in look. Gonna have to keep that thought in mind!

I think that it will depend on the height of the ceiling, the items to be displayed on them, but, mostly personal preference. I would suggest that you place a line of painters tape (will not stick to painted surfaces, easily removed) at the height you are thinking of putting your shelf, then leaving it for a few days to see how it feels when you look at it from different angles, in relation to other wall decor, etc. If it does not feel right, move the tape and try again. This will give you the sense of the shelf, without having to put multiple holes in the wall for hanging it. Good Luck.
