Aside from the common colors you mention,yes, they can be one of nearly any color. These small spiders are totally harmless, and even if you could provoke one to bite, it would have little or no effect at all. They can even easily be handled, but I prefer just to leave them undisturbed in their web.

Could be a brown garden spider. Like all spiders, they have venom but their venom isn't dangerous to humans. Like the person above me said, though, any large spider can bite and there will usually be some pain or discomfort associated with such a bite.
