Have I damaged my singing voice?

Have I damaged my singing voice?

  • So last year in August I got sick, but I sang through rehearsals for this choir program for a school thing. After a couple of days of over singing and maybe even belting out the notes for sound, I realized that I needed to take a break. During rehearsals, I would sing for 30 minutes (rehearsals lasted about 1-2 hours for three days a week) and then rest my voice. However, after my cold disappeared, my throat has been feeling sore and my notes are slightly flat. I love singing with all my heart and it's sad that I haven't been able to really sing since August. I am in advanced women's chorus in high school and we rehearse a lot for conferences and competitions, so it's also very hard not to try singing...even though I can't. :(

  • Answer:

It is not likely that one cold has done permanent damage to your vocal cords. What you probably need more than anything is some vocal rest. Take a week and talk as little a possible and DO NOT SING!! On the other hand, there may be more problems at bay. If you sing a lot and do not have a teacher you may have developed some bad habits that are doing damage to your cords and this illness just magnified that. I would first suggest going to an ENT. Ear Nose and Throat Doc. They stick a video camera down your nose a look at your cords. If you have developed nodules they will be able to see it. Most importantly, if you love to sing, you need to find a good voice teacher. Check this website to find an SLS teacher in your area, Good Luck Girl! http://www.speechlevelsinging.com/

Hi! I don't think you have damaged your voice,i think it is because muscles are loosen... Try to sing a flat tone with some vowels and just relax your voice, and then see if it works... :) I hope this helped you, somehow :)

Nikola

I'm sure you could do voice training. don't give up.
