How long does it take for a sprained ankle to heal?

How long does a serious high sprained ankle take to fully heal?

  • I sprained it pretty bad 8 months ago playing basketball and it still has the little swollen ball. I only ride the bike at the gym for cardio no running or jogging. I also never healed it properly using any walking boot of any kind cause for the 1st 4-5 months cause of no medical insurance. And I don't have $350 for an MRI. Is there anywhere to get an affordable one? I finally went to specialist few months ago and took x rays nothing broken. He gave me a boot and I have been trying to wear it as much as possible but my ankle just won't heal and swollen ball on side of my foot won't go away. Is it also smart to keep doing rehab exercises with resistance band even though its swollen or sore? Any advice to help heal and get rid of the swollen ball is much appreciated! Jason, the trick to this is to work the opposite foot and ankle. There is a process in the body where strength is transferred from the stronger side to the weaker. So start working the uninjured ankle and foot. You are going to find that the recovery is going to be much faster. I am assuming that the specialist gave you the diagnosis of the sprain. They are graded from I to III. My assumption is that you have a grade II. This doesn't require surgery but you are going to have to work on strengthening both sides. Always start off by doing each exercise movement with the uninjured side. Do your sets with a minute between them and after the 3rd set then do the injured side. With time you are going to find that the sides will equalize. See if you can find a physical therapist that will work with you. They should be able to set up a program for you for a minimum fee.
