How to get Rodeo sponsors?
-
So Starting in May, I'm going to start rodeoing. I'll be borrowing my friends mare and barrel racing and pole bending her until my gelding is finished in those areas. (My friend will be rodeoing with me) And I was curious on how to get sponsors to pay for my entries and such, because all of the money I earn/win will be going to cancer associations all over canada. Every rodeo winnings will go to a different city to cancer. If you wondering why I want to run for cancer its way more then just cancer. In December 2011 my uncle passed away from cancer. Its really a long story, so I'll make it short. He had a heart attack December 10th 2009, a year after that within the first week of December 2010 we found out he had cancer in his eye. He lost his eye, then they had to go back in and take more of the cancer out cause they missed some (stupid). Then end of Nov, 2011 he went for a check up to make sure the cancer didn't spread, and it did. It was in his liver the size of his fist. With in a week it was in his lungs. December 7th 2011 we got a phone call from my auntie, and the cancer had spread to his brain. Everyone got to talk to him on the phone a couple nights later and I promised him all the money I win will go to cancer, and that I wanted him to come horse back riding with me before he passed he was so excited to come for a ride he said he hadn't been on a horse in 30 years. December 15th he passed away. So if you know any ideas or information on how to get sponsors that would be GREATLY appreciated! Or if you know of any companies I should write letters to who would consider sponsoring me that would be great. Thanks in advance. Cheers.

Answer:
Well a good start is to try people that will benefit from their names showing at the rodeos. Ask all of your local saddlery and feed stores. Any advertisement for them is a good thing. Especially when it is linked to a worthy cause such as cancer research. You could also ask around at some of the cancer research institutes as they are in touch with fund raisers all the time and may be able to give you the names of interested companies. Try some companies that supply goods to the hospital, such as their major equipment suppliers. Quite often they will donate to the hospitals directy through sponsorships and this may be something they see as worthwhile. Check you local specialist hospitals website as quite often their suppliers will be listed on the website due to donations. Also, look for scientific exhibitions and conferences within your area as these will be targeted at the hospitals and all of their suppliers will generally be present. They will then be listed on the conference website as attendees and you can google them from there. Hope this helps and good luck :)

What you want is corporate sponsors, like Dodge Trucks, Skeeter Trailers, Saddle Company's, Halter Companies etc. Write letters, not emails to the CEO of the company and explain what you want to do, they may even help pay the training on your own horse, or buy you one already trained, then you have to place in almost every competition, put these company names on your trailer and Truck with the Cancer Society you are giving to.

that's a noble idea, but it's going to cost someone a fortune to keep paying your entry, gas, food, motel (or will you sleep in your trailer?), feed for the horse, etc... those who have proven they can win big and are doing so already, get the sponsors. but they better keep winning, otherwise the sponsors leave. so, you might get a few local places to donate some money, but it's kind of unrealistic to expect any company to basically throw their money away (sorry, but that's business) by giving you money.... because you can't prove that you're even going to win. even the best riders don't win every time. I'd suggest instead to do a local memorial rodeo in memory of your uncle. you can ask the local talent to sign up (for a jackpot...their entry fees put together) and ask a saddle maker or silversmith to donate some expensive and cool stuff....sell tickets to the rodeo and the raffle and that money can be donated to cancer research. you can get your local news to do a report on that to bring people in, also talk with the newspaper too. sorry for your loss.

Before you get any kind of solid sponsor, you'll have to prove yourself in the rodeo world. Receiving a sponsorship is essentially the sponsor paying you (in either money or equipment) to be a human advertisement for them. You can ask any company, person, or organization to sponsor you at any time, but you probably won't get many (or any) sponsors without proving that you have what it takes to make it in the NFR. Work hard, find a good trainer, and start entering some rodeos. When you are getting good, start asking for sponsorships. Good luck!
