Answer:
Well, I've experienced spontaneous lucid dreaming ever since I can remember. So, I think it just depends on your state of mind before you go to sleep. Obviously all these exercises that books about lucid dreaming are doing is just bringing you into a certain state of mind that makes it easier for you to experience them. Also, if you have any more trouble waking up from a lucid dream, try wiggling your pinkies. It sounds crazy, I know. It's a trick I read in a book about out of body experiences, but it works for me in lucid dreaming as well. :) Also, I have never heard of lucid dreaming being dangerous either ... It can't possibly be any more dangerous than any other kind of dream. As a matter of fact it should be more safe because YOU are controlling it, right? Don't let some random article scare you. Fear is your greatest enemy in life. Never let it get the best of you!

Sometimes it just happens spontaneously. What's hard is trying to make it happen on purpose... I've had 3 lucid dreams myself in my life so far, and while I've tried my darnest to trigger them, my successes were all accidental, when I wasn't trying at all. I've never heard of how lucid dreaming can be dangerous; nightmares might disturb you but they won't physically hurt you any... and if anyone got trapped in a dream, how would they have ever been able to get that fact out to the waking world so that somebody could write about it in a book or on the internet? If it's truly lucid, you can turn the dream from bad to fun at will.
