What is a server address on minecraft?

Which IP address should I use for a Minecraft Server?

  • Hey, I want to start a private Minecraft Server for me and my friends, but I was wondering which IP I need to set the server to use. It's a Port Forwarding based server (not Hamachi, but I'll probably switch to that if I need to), and some of them live nowhere near me (one of them is about 15 miles away). So, I was wondering, which IP do I need to use for them to connect to? Is it my external IP, my internal IP, or my IPv4 address? And how do I find out what that is (I know how to find my IPv4 btw, it's under command prompt's IPCONFIG)? Thanks a lot guys!

  • Answer:

IP config wont give you the IP you need to use. Your Wide Area Network IP is needed not your Local Area Network IP. Use this website whatismyip.com to tell you what your WAN IP is. ---------------------------------------... You give the WAN IP to your friends to connect but you port forward to the LAN IP that the server is running on the one you find out by running ipconfig or double clicking on the network icon.

you need to give them the external ip used by your router, this will change everytime the router is off for a hour or so. you give them that, then in the router you tell the router to forward the minecraft port 25605 to the internal IP address. and your done, this is by far the easiest but is unfortunatly the most unreliable way to do it. Your better off if there are only a few of you using hamachi, remember you cant run the server on the same pc as the client...

for you to access your server it must be a local ip address, like 192.168.1.254 -remember to ''reserve'' this address in the DHCP then your friend must use your public ip address -the one assigned to your modem by your isp e.g.80.110.34.98 then you redirect public ip to private ip of your server e.g. 192.168.1.254 (example) and forward the necessary ports or port range be careful though this is a major door opened for anyone who scan ip addresses to search for hacking doors
