Singing tips for beginners?

I'm interested in improving my singing voice - it certainly isn't anything to brag about, hahaha. I'm a little off-key and can't transition notes very smoothly - I believe that I'm an alto. If anyone has any tips to help (besides getting a vocal coach, which I'm planning to do) or exercises to recommend, they would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

If you have a piano sing from C to G and back then move one note higher. Also try singer from high to low. :)
