Can I get one extra channel?

Can left and right audio signals be twisted together to get one mono channel?

  • I'm putting sound sensitive LED's in my jeep and I am using a hardwired signal input (rather than a mic). I don't want my left and right footwells blinking different brightnesses (ex: right channel is louder than left in a certain part of a song). Can I simply take the signal cables (line-level audio signal coming from preamp) and twist them together to make one mono source? I don't want to short anything or ruin my preamp or amp. Thanks! -Matt

No. I wouldn't do that. You could damage your preamp. Just use left or right channel for both sides. Ex use left ch for both left and right side. Unless you have a mono out signal or a device that can sum stereo into mono.

If you connect the left & right preamp out lines, then that will kill your stereo - All you will have is mono, to your speakers AND your lights. If you want stereo music but mono LED's, then you need a separate stereo output for the LED's so you don't also mix the music.
