U.S. tank landings in Normandy, France?

  • I'm working on a book and I decided to choose Normandy as my spot to land. The story is about tanks landing in Normandy and finding their way into Germany, and intern, Berlin. What I need right now is where did U.S. tanks land on the Normandy beach head? What battalion (Or unit/ regiment, whatever) of tanks landed? How many tanks landed, and where did they plan to go after they landed? Also, any other additional information would be appreciated, thank you.

  • Answer:

They were belonging to 7th armored regiment and they landed on Omaha beach Their mission is to capture the Coastal guns threaten to destroy coastal cities and to advance interior to help British Commonwealth forces Approximately 21 Tanks were landed out of which only 2 survived because the fortifications are very much stronger than expected

In the U.S. Army in WW2 tanks were organized in battalions which could be either independent General Headquarters battalions assigned to an Army Corps and attached to infantry divisions as needed, or they could be part of permanent Armored Divisions made up of multiple battalions of tanks and mechanized infantry riding in half-tracks. One Tank Battalion contained 3 Companies of 18 M4 Medium tanks (only the British called it the "Sherman", to the American's it was the M4 Medium) and 1 Company of 17 M5 Stuart light tanks. For the actual assault on Omaha Beach the 741st and 743rd GHQ Tank Battalions were equipped with 2 Companies of M4 Medium Duplex Drive amphibious tanks and 1 Company of M4 and M4A1 tanks with wading trunks. The former would be deposited in the channel far from shore and swim in, the latter had to be carried by landing craft close to shore and drive in. Nearly all of the DD tanks from the 741st sank while those from the 743rd were landed directly ashore by landing craft instead of wading in. The 70th GHQ Tank Battalion was used at Utah beach and its DD tanks mostly made is ashore. After Normandy the U.S. Army deployed some 16 Armored Divisions (14 of which saw action) and 66 GHQ Tank Battalions on the drive into Germany.
