of course.... an athletic scholarship is based on what you could bring to their athletic department You choose to not play & not only will you loose your scholarship, you could actually be required to re-pay scholarship funds that have been used on your behalf for example, if it is a 4-year scholarship, it is possible (depending on how the language is written) that you must fulfill the entire 4-year commitment my cousin got a 4-year football scholarship. His spleen nearly ruptured & he had to stop playing football..... he lost his scholarship (the school would have replaced it with an academic one if had been eligible due to the extreme circumstances) and, he was contractually liable to re-pay the amount of money the scholarship had already paid on his behalf (9 months of school)

it depends on your excuses of doing that whether it is considerable if not he will replace you immediately if he or she has the authority to do so
