Ingrown toenail surgery?
-
Does the surgery hurt? I have had a bad ingrown toenail for 3 years now and have been hiding it from the world. I had to quit karate so nobody would see and take me to the doctor. I am 13 years old and I don't know what to do. It is now getting so much worse and it's more red and swollen than it ever has been. Lastly, when you are at the doctor to see if you have an ingrown toenail, what do they do? Does that hurt? Please tell me the procedure of the surgery and which parts hurt. Seriously, I don't know if I can do this without taking the cowards way out. (Suicide) I am not a sharp-object person. P.S. Can you use anesthesia?

Ok. You need to go see that doctor. It's not that big a deal. I had the exact same thing when I was a teenager on my right big toe. The podiatrist stuck my toe with a needle to give local anesthesia, so it wasn't surgery. I watched the whole thing. They just cut out the nail that's grown too far to the side. They cut mine all the way up past the nail bed in its base, so it never grows back from that spot anymore. But you can't tell. It's such a thin slice. Also, it was such a satisfying experience that the small amount of discomfort, not even any real pain during the 5 minute procedure, was completely worth it. You leaving it to fester is not worth it and probably far more painful that a few pricks of a needle, which is all the pain you'll feel. Don't get worked up or embarrassed about it. These things happen to anyone all the time.

If you genuinely have an ingrown toenail it already hurts a lot. The surgery involves a local anesthetic that will numb just that part of your toe. The edge of the nail will be trimmed back (cut away a long sliver down the side of your nail where it is growing into your toe) then bandaged up. You don't have to watch and it doesn't feel like much when it's happening (just a little pressure and pain but less than you're already feeling.) Your folks can take care of the bandage changes and cleaning if your not good with that sort of thing. It might start to throb a bit a few hours later and hurt in a tolerable way for five or six days. You can take Tylenol if you need to but it won't hurt as bad as the ingrown nail does. It's really not as hard as you are imagining it, and you'll be so happy with the result in just a couple of weeks you should be able to go back to Karate. Do let your folks know so they can get this done for you. There is a possibility that you could develop an infection if you don't have this fixed and that would be way worse than the little surgery they do to fix the problem. You'll be fine. It's not bad at all and you'll be all healed up before you know it.

I had it done. The fear was worse than the surgery. They do a small shot. Minimal pain. I did not watch... Did a quick slice and removed the excess nail. On went the gauze and tape, and I was done. Even drove home with no problem. The biggest hurt was in my head. The surgery was nothing.
Dont worry. Relax. Its not painful. I have had two times ripped toe nail and it had to be removed. Your full toe nail wont be removed. Only the part where it hurt will be removed a bit. Doctor will first administer anesthesia and then you wont feel a thing. After that he will remove the extra toe nail and put a dressing on it. It dont hurt even when the anesthesia wears off. And overall it will be totally fine by 7 days max. It dont hurt at all and you should be able to walk normally right after its removed but its not recommended as it can cause bleeding. So must not walk too much for first two days, but trust me it dont hurt and you dont even need pain killers. You`ll be fine. I have had two times big toe nail ripped off and both times removed. Good luck and relax and get it done asap.
