How do i rig my laptop to surround sound?

i would like to play music from you tube and so on through my 5.1 speakers connected to the tv. the home cinema came as a dvd player with 5.1 surround sound so i need to know what leads i need and where to plug them in. i have managed to suss i can run hdmi from laptop to back of tv but sound only comes through the tv which is rubbish. do i need an amp independantly set up?? can i rig my laptop to the dvd player somehow to enable sound to play through all speakers?? help would be appreciated. thanks

You would have to plug your HDMI o/p into your Receiver, may not be possible, if what you have is one of those DVD/home theater combo deals
