Resting heart rate in the 40's to low 50's, should I be concerned or am I just being paranoid?
-
About one week ago I suffered a what I would call a severe panic attack, felt more like a heart attack to me but I am a 21 year old male in good shape and I exercise daily using the Insanity workout program. A heart attack is hard for me to believe being that I am so young but my heart rate since then(or right around then) has been in the 40's to 50's. The night of my "attack" my resting heart rate got to approximately 170(just laying in bed). It felt as if my eyes were rolling to the back of my head and I was told I became sheet white, along with a feeling in my heart that felt like it was literally trying to pump "something" through it. Since then I have been okay, even still able to complete my workouts, but every once in a while i feel a pain in my chest. Any ideas here, I've scheduled a Dr. appt just to be safe, just looking for some opinions out there, thanks y'all. I go to school as an EMT so a medical approach to an answer would be appreciated.

Answer:
A heart rate >60 is considered bradycardia. This is common in people that exercise (athletic). Symptomatic bradycardia needs to be treated. The symptoms can include dyspnea (shortness of breath), syncope (dizzy spells/fainting). Asymptomatic bradycardia has no cause for concern
