How do I stop a scratchy violin?

Should I stop taking violin lesson?

  • I've been taking violin lessons for nearly 2 years. At first, I was utterly enthused to learn violin, I had this huge passion in violin. Plus, I wanted to display to my friend that I have an outstanding talent. My teacher always says that I'm talented in playing violin but somehow, I feel like the enthusiasm has long gone. I feel heavy to do practices, they feel like chores. Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against my teacher though she can be irritating sometimes but she can be very nice. The fee is $90 a month. I don't want my mother to spend money over something that I'm no longer interested but the teacher told me that she's going to teach me vibrato. I feel a bit guilty to abruptly stop taking lesson and it would be awkward to tell her that I'm going to stop. I don't know. I'm quite confused. What do you think? What should I do? :/

First, I would say that you sincerely need a break, and that is not a bad thing. Second, you might try another instructor to shake things up and give you a new perspective. I have been playing music all my life, and it is my profession, but to this day I still need to do things to keep it fresh and rekindle my passion for it. The important thing is not to look at it from the standpoint of continuing just because you have invested 2 years into it. Rather, look at is from the viewpoint that this is not something that you are doing on a whim. It has been 2 years, and that in itself is a great accomplishment. Be proud of that, and don't be afraid to shift gears. The truth is, the violin will be there any time that you are ready to resume! Good Luck!

It sounds like you've lost interest in the violin in more ways than one. Don't feel too worried about stopping doing this. For all you know you might be a great dancer or photographer. Life is for taking chances and having experiences, your mum I'm sure would understand whatever why you choose. But if your not enjoying it anymore and the fees are high, maybe you could give it a rest for a while and see what you can do. You can always go back to the violin if you want to.

I am a musician too and about the lessons, sometimes they are unpleasant but necessary task. If you are not interested then you must not continue. It will be wasting time & money. Do not get confused man! It will be rather idiotic than awkward if you do things against your feelings. I say take your time, have a break, if you miss the music again then you do have a choice to return! Simple! Do not make things complicated.

I had lessons in alto saxophone for about 2 years and reached grade 2 (which is pretty shite). Then I lost interest, started socialising outside of school more so I gave up lessons. Now, 3 years on, i so regret giving it up. I could have been grade 5/6 by now! It's a horrible feeling to regret something you gave up on just because at the time you couldn't be bothered. Please don't give it up. You'll begin to enjoy it again soon!

Why dont you take a break for a while then go back to it. i failed my drivjng test 3 times and it git to the point were i started to dread my lessons and in the beginning i loved them. if its something you really love deep down you will find that pashion again someday. x

How about "Do What Thou Wilt" and "So Mote Be It"? "May you have great success in everything you do!"

well i quit the violin after only playing for 2 years because i got bored, annoyed frustrated, lost interest you take your pick, but ive regreted it since. I know i wasnt very good but now i have completely forgotten how to read music and play. So i really urge you to keep the violin as a part of you, even if its just taking an hour a day to play it by yourself, or join a group of people and just JAM every _______ (fill in the day of the week). but i know if their comes a time when you feel you are losing/ have lost the ability you will forever regret it. Just keep it somehow in your life, continue with it, it never hurts to have that skill on the backburner. If your stuck somewere with just your violin its a good waay to make some bus money.
