What is the difference between an LCD and an LED monitor?

My monitor for my desktop is going out. It turns black after about 10 seconds of being on. Instead of figuring out what is wrong, I decided to just buy a new one but I do not know the difference in LCD and LED. I want one to last me longer than just the four years this one has but is also best bet for the price. Can someone just explain the difference please?

LED is actually the type of backlighting used by some LCD monitors. Many low end and early LCD displays use cold cathode tubes for backlight, newer, higher quality LCD displays will use LED backlighting and LED type backlights are significantly superior to cold cathode backlights in display quality- better contrast, image clarity, uniform brightness. LEDs have generally lower power consumption(great for battery powered devices), take up much less space and last a very long time, plus if one LED dies (I've never actually had that happen to me yet), it won't render the display completely unusable, the only downside I can think of with LED backlit LCD displays is that they are a bit more expensive. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LED-backlit_LCD_display

At the present there are two main methods of backlighting in LCD flat-panels: - CCFL (Cold-Cathode Fluorescent Lamp) - LED (Light-emitting Diode) CCFL is a method of backlighting for LCD screens, and consists of a series of tubes laid horizontally across the screen. That tube is similar to the fluorescent tube you may find on most offices' ceiling. If you opened your current LCD display and take out the LCD panel, you'll see there're many tubes underneath. LED backlighting is another method of backlighting which uses LEDs instead of the light tubes to light the display up. There are two difference methods of LED backlighting: - Direct backlighting: It can be used to increase contrast level by turning some LEDs off — thus increasing the amount of black in parts of the picture. - Edge backlighting: It can be used to make screens that are incredibly thin — the LEDs are at the side and not behind the screen. Even though Direct backlighting involved using more LEDs than Edge backlighting both method consume far less amount of power compare to fluorescent backlighting. In comparison: - LEDD (LED Display) is visual appealing, sleek and stylish. - LEDD displays richer, much more vivid colors. - The contrast of LEDD is much deeper which truer blacks. - LEDD reduces power consumption by as much as 40%. - LEDD are lighter and maneuverable. - LEDD has no mercury due to it doesn’t use light tubes for lighting up the display panel. - The expected life span of LEDD is much better (100,000 hours). - LEDD has been considered as the most reliable of all the flat screen genre. So, as you may see: - Both display are LCD. - The LED is an upgrade of CCFL backlighting LCD. - The main difference between CCFL-LCD and LED-LCD is the backlighting method. Cheers!
