Help with my newborn hamsters?

HELP ROBOROVSKI hamsters?

  • Hi on sunday I brought 4 ROBOROVSKI HAMSTERS from a person off gum tree I payed £30 for 4 of them and they told me they are all boys but they don't look like hamsters they look like mice could they be?? Also I've been keeping them in the same cage because I got told there all boys but 2 of them have become very fat ad I think there pregnant how can I tell? And what should I do because I only have 1 cage and I've read that ROBOROVSKI HAMSTERS / mice can have quite a lot of baby ones and I don't want to end up with loads of them should its hard to separate them because I only have 1 cage and if they are pregnent is there anyway to stop it???? Need help ASAP

    You can only keep roborovskis together when they are siblings of the same gender, otherwise the age difference and the sexual tension will cause lots of fighting. Determining gender is almost impossible, but can be done if you know what to look for (two little dots on boys!). However, having a couple that are fatter than others is normal. Almost always there will be some that are lazy and eat lots, and others that are very active and don't eat. It's exaggerated because the lazy ones eat all the food leaving none for the others. But don't worry, they will all be getting food!

How can you not know if they are hamsters or mice? Mice have long tails. Hamsters don't. Honestly, you should not have gotten this many hamsters if you only have one cage. It was a major mistake on your part. Robo hamsters often have to be separated due to fighting, so you need to have extra cages around. And now that some of them may be pregnant, they absolutely need to be separated from the other two. (Because if they ARE pregnant, they will get pregnant again almost immediately after giving birth.) And no, if they are pregnant, there is no way to stop it. There's really no way to tell if they are pregnant. It's a matter of waiting and seeing if they have babies. Truthfully, if you can't get at least one more cage, you need to find a new home for two of them. You won't be able to keep this many together forever, they WILL end up requiring separating. Chances are, you'll end up needing four separate cages.
