Friar Laurence was very uptight and totally against any unseemly contact. This was very typical of the time period... very Victorian. Couples often never even kissed before getting married. The Friar discouraged any contact between Romeo and Juliet, going so far as to attempt to physical stop them. It has only been recently that some modern linguists can hypothesized that the Friar didn't actually do this for any reasons other than that he was homosexual and was attracted to Romeo himself. The Nurse, on the other hand, was quite open and free about sexual matters (at least according to the time period). The nurse openly encouraged contact between the two lovers and tried to discretely poison the Friar when he was preventing the two.
