2 dogs that isn't really child friendly.... What should I do when the time comes for me 2 start a family?

Im 23 and have 3 dogs. One is a 7 month old American Bulldog I have had since she was 10 weeks. Brilliant temperament, great dog. Now... The other two one is a 2 year old Yorkshire Terrier and the other is a 1 year old Irish Terrier Cross. I had them when they were 6 months and the other was a 1 year old. I taken them in because the families they came from could no longer care for them. One family had a lot of hyperactive kids that often tormented the Irish Cross and the Yorkie is poorly bred with nervous genes and came from a family that locked him in the garden day and night. They are great dogs, very friendly but towards hyper children they can both be fearful. I am only 23 and me and my partner have been talking about starting a family next year. Obviously I wouldn't leave a child and the dogs alone but with toddlers falling and learning to walk what if it fell on one of the dogs? How do I manage this situation.

Answer:
See about someone in your area that will babyproof your dogs, and then make sure you've got gates so the dogs can go to an area that is babyfree. Then just watch them. As your kids grow, make sure they learn how to treat dogs, and also make sure that if they get hyper your dogs can go to an area and get away from them. The problem people have is mostly that they leave the dogs alone with the kids, or that they train the dogs using physical methods. When the dog turns to reprimand a child using physical methods then that means they bite the child on the face... and that of course is not what you want. The person who said not to discipline a dog for growling is right. You want that early warning that the dog is getting nervous, so you can move them away from the child and let them relax. If you get after a dog for growling then the dog eventually won't growl, and then you have a very dangerous situation because the dog won't tell you when they're starting to get nervous. You also want to teach your dog how and where to bite. On the hands, feather soft, don't break the skin. That way if the dog ever feels like they need to bite (say the child has hurt them, seriously hurt them) then they have permission to bite on the hand softly, but not on the face or hard enough to do permanent damage. The more practice you do teaching your dog how to bite humans like that the better they'll get at it. Think of a birddog. They can bite hard enough to break bones, or they can carry a bird in their mouth without ruffling a feather. A dog CAN be taught to bite gently. Baby and toddler-proofing your dog will include things like teaching them that if someone grabs their tail and pulls then it's not anything but a game. Being happy to have every part of them touched. Being fine with someone getting in their food or grabbing a toy from them. Things like that. My dog is not the most gentle dog out there, but he learned before we had our first these things and now there are times when I have to tell the kids to leave him alone because they'll grab his tail and let him pull them around and he doesn't care... I don't leave him alone with them though so when they're too rough he gives me a look, and I tell them to leave him alone, and when he's on the other side of the baby gate everyone (including the 4 year old who can open the gate) understands to leave him alone. A dog I know (Punkin') was very afraid of children but has gotten a lot better. My kids helped in socializing her, she learned not all kids scream and that they can give treats and be friendly. But a huge part of that was letting her have an area where she knew the kids couldn't follow her. The rest just took time. Add: A yorkie is small enough to be hurt by a toddler falling on them. However, you wouldn't leave the yorkie alone with the toddler long enough for that to happen, and the yorkie will learn to stay away from the toddler in front of them. Believe me. It's sort of like birds and cars. The birds always move out of the road and hardly ever get hit by a car. Same thing. The dog will learn to run once baby is mobile. They all do. Just give them places to get away to.

1. The dogs would not be harmed by the baby falling on them. They'll be fine. As for the hyperactive children go remember that they will be getting used to your baby from day 1. and your baby will be learning how to treat animals from day one. So it will be less likely that they will be scared of the baby. Never, ever discipline the dogs for growling. It is their warning sign. Kinda like when we count to 3.

Get busy training the dogs. Treat them with gentle hands. You'll all be just fine.

Personally I would never put dogs like that around kids even if i did try to have them trained. it's not worth the risk. I know a kid who had his face bitten off by the family pet - a dog they had trained to the 9's - it was given the all clear to be around kids and 3 years later the boy grabbed the dog's rear end unexpectedly and CHOMP! please don't take this the wrong way, but it astounds me how some people don't think before they act. If you wanted children why would you choose those dogs?

ok, um, try to train the dogs, and see if they can handle being around OLDER children 1st. if they can't even be around 10 year olds, i'm sorry to say this, but u may have to choose one or the other. I'm sorry to sy that, but i'm sure that ur dogs will be able to get along with small kids, they might not even need trianing, but don't take an unnescessary risk.. get them trained if u can!

You may need to prepare yourself to choose which you want more. Good luck that's a tough one when you already love your pets x
