BGK with Oscar - anyone tried this & and Oscar diet question?
-
I was thinking of upgrading my baby Oscar's tank from a 90 gallon to a 150 gallon and got some good tank mate ideas in my previous question, but I'm curious if anyone's ever tried an Oscar with a Black Ghost Knife? I was checking out the prices of tanks today, and for me to get a custom made tank that's 6 ft long, 3 feet deep, and 2 feet tall will not cost much more than the 150 gallon. The 6' x 3' x 2' comes to about 270 US gallons. But I'm just wondering if this combination can work. I've read up on BGK in the AQUARIUM magazine before on how getting them a densely planted tank is very crucial for them to overcome their shy nature. On the other hand I see my Oscar beat up all my plants (apparently for fun, he doesn't eat them). Also, my Oscar is tiny but a hungry little eating machine (at 1" he eats 5 times a day and already seems to be getting bigger in size). I'm not sure if he would leave any frozen or freeze dried food over for the BGK. BUT!!! I really love BGK and I'm very sure that the 270 gallon COULD accommodate one, so if there's any way this can work I would be overjoyed. Your thoughts on this? Oh and I've been reading up a lot on Oscars but can't seem to figure this one out ---> Is feeding him my home bred and raised Cherry shrimp okay? Will he still eat those live ones AND accept freeze dried shrimp too? Or is he likely to reject the freeze dried shrimp? He absolutely loves the freeze dried shrimp and brine shrimp as well. I haven't fed him any live feed yet. I would never feed him feeder carp or feeder ghost shrimp, but I would be willing to breed ghost shrimp on my own if that's a good option for him.

In the big tank is could work. Issues are. Get a bigger BGK, the Oscar will grow FAST, get bigger than the BGK and possibly bully it. But putting a 2" Oscar with an 8" BGK is safe. By the time the Oscar gets to 8", the BGK is 10", still OK Feeding, Oscars are MUCH greedier feeders, so you will probably need to "target feed" the BGK. You may get it tame enough to hand feed, or feed the Oscar, and then give the BKG it's food with some tongs, putting the food in front of it's cave. Give the BGK a good hiding spot, a plastic pipe is good. Some place it can take cover and keep right away from the Oscar if need be. As for the Shrimp question, he will probably like the live ones more.. But when they are gone, the freeze dried ones will start looking good again after a couple of days. I mostly feed my Oscar frozen raw shrimps, and pellets. The trick is to give him some pellets first, when he's hungry he eats then. Then the fresh treats. If you do it the other way around, he's not so hungry, and ignores the dry food. Worst that might happen with live shrimp is that he will get fussy and not eat the dry food next day. But the day after he will be hungry again, and back to eating whatever you offer. Ian

He should be fine with a BGK, BUT get the BGK at a larger size so that your Oscar doesn't consider him a snack. You need to feed your Oscar a high-quality pellet as his main diet. Feed him live foods OCCASIONALLY, about once a week or less. You can substitute pellet on some days for freeze-dried food, or thawed frozen food...But I wouldn't suggest doing it too often unless you want a spoiled, picky Oscar! :)

A oscar would be fine with a BGK if raised both together bythemself when they are small. One reason is that so when the oscar get bigger than the BGK he will already know him and cause oscars intend to grow faster then BGK's. Home bred shrimp will be fine, i suggest feeding him fry shrimp first then as he gets older " devolps a bigger mouth " then throw bigger shrimp in for him to eat. Make sure your shrimp dont have disease's and dont feed him left over dead shrimp it can cause ' HITHD ' - Hole in the head disease. Oscar fish diet, Oscars intead to like meaty substance;s well if you want your oscar a his finest your going to have to feed him his diets and proteins. . Your cherry shrimp . Hikari gold . Crickets . Veggie's . Beefheart . Frozen blood worms Those are the best diet foods.

Depends on the size of the Oscar. Baby Oscars that are 2-3 inches big are most likely not even going to be able to get crickets, unless baby crickets in thier mouth. Mixing the diet up totally is the best situation. Give the shrimp one day, flakes another day, circkets a different day, veggies another day, blood worms another day ect... I think you get the idea. That should keep your Oscar active healthy and happy. JV
