How to become a pharmacy technician?

How do you become a Pharmacy Technician in Alaska?

  • Hi! So I am interested in the pharmacy career. I looked into the qualifications and requirements that Alaska requires for a Pharmacy Technician. It says to get a license, you need to have a high school diploma, be 18 years of age and have no felonies charged and a clean driver's record (etc), and it costs $100. But you need training. So my question is, how do you get the training? Is there a special program? Like in college, or is it on the job-training? Are there any other tests that I am not aware of? If it's on the job-training, is there anything that I have to do, like applications, to get in it?

Hi Marina, this is one of those catch-22 types of situations. You do not technically need formal training (such as at a school or college), but you do need to have training completed through a pharmacist in charge at a pharmacy. To get to that point, you need to compete against everyone else trying to get training. Here is what I recommend: Obtain your national certification through the PTCB (look for a pharmacy to train you the whole time). To get the PTCB certification, all you need to do is study for the exam (rent a guide - go to http://www.pharmacytechnicianhq.com/ and check out their certification page to learn more). To look for jobs in your area, try http://bestjobsearchwebsite.com (it is free and they do not ask for anything). Best of luck,

Indeed.com is a very good resource for locating pharmacy technician jobs in Alaska. Indeed lets you set up a free job profile and whenever a local employer posts a pharmacy technician job, Indeed will send you an email alert. CareerBuilder.com offers a similar service with email notification. You can also check out the website for the Alaska Pharmacists Association. Pharmacy Managers will often post jobs there for technicians: http://www.alaskapharmacy.org/html/resources/employment.php The University of Alaska in Anchorage offers a totally online program for pharmacy technician training but tuition is over $10K, so you may want to consider studying on your own for the PTCB certification exam. Though the test is not currently required by the State Board of Pharmacy, many pharmacy managers in Alaska prefer to hire certified technicians. Hope this helps and Good Luck
