How can I be more confident at job interviews?

How can I deal with job interviews where there are internal candidates?

  • I have recently had three interviews where the feedback I received was that I was second and that they had appointed an internal candidate. Cynic that I am I am starting to think that some companies only bring in external candidates to tick a box on their recruitment policy rather than taking them seriously. On one of the interviews I was told that the post had been given to someone who had been doing the job for several months. I went for a job interview yesterday where I was given very little information and spent hours trying to find out more about the organisation and the job role. This proved to be very difficult and I felt that the internal candidate had an overwhelming advantage. I end up feeling so demoralized and don't know how I can keep bouncing back. Does anyone have any experience of dealing with this?

  • Answer:

Try refocusing our job search to avoid those types of companies. If that's possible. If not, then just hilight the positive aspects of having a fresh eye on a company. Getting someone new to look at a job, even if there isn't really a problem per se, can really improve things.

Just keep in mind that companies are not interested in wasting their time 'checking off' boxes or messing with your head. They are interested in obtaining the best candidate. It is in the employer's best interests to seriously consider all candidates, not just spin their wheels. In most cases it is in fact the internal candidate who has the edge because they have knowledge of the company operations and a company-specific work history. To stay motivated, you just have to keep in mind that you have to be in it to win it. The only jobs you have absolutely no chance of obtaining are the ones you don't apply to.
