Circle hooks for lures?
-
I want to try circle hooks on my home made lures, i make flying c lures which always has a treble hook attached when fish are hooked its not easy to get hook out ,number of reasons the hooks are around size 8 to size 2 and all three hooks can be hooked into the fish also i use chest waders and a landing net which again gets caught up in the treble hooks not easy to release fish while fishing in a fast flowing water ,so what i need to know is has anyone used these on lures and if so please can you tell me what size i should use ( please note i do not use barbless hooks)

Answer:
no, l don't think so. circle hooks are made to be used with bait and to be at least partially swallowed so the hook can work its magic when slowly pulled by the line. they are made to catch the fish in the corner of its jaw, which will not happen with a lure that is travelling past at any sort of speed. perhaps with a soft plastic they may work, but crankbaits, spinners, spoons, topwaters, spinnerbaits and such need hooks with external points to hook the fish on the initial strike.

It all depends on what you are trying to catch. I have used circle hooks all my life.. but at the same time I do big game fishing in north Carolina. I would highly recommend circle hooks and would need to know what your trying to catch to tell you the size.
