Data Ripping website Legal?

I own a local dating website, and a few months ago I launched a new feature on my site that lets people who have registered on competitors websites to copy over all there profile information automatically, the user just enters there username for the competitors website, and data ripping software on my server, copies all the data over to my website. This morning i have received a letter from a competitors website threatening legal action as they did not give me permission to copy data from there website. But my understanding is the the personal details of the user requesting the transfer can not be copyrighted? and there the only details being transferred. And as i have the users permission to transfer the details its legal? If anyone can provide more information on this it would be appreciated.

Its illegal if you didnt ask for permission, whatever the data is. What you did is stole data from another company, thats very illegal!
