Need some help with owner manual?

Okay i need help!im a first time Horse owner and i need help with What i should be feeding her?

  • Answer:

Purina Senior feed is a very well balanced nutritionally complete feed. My vet is also an equine nutritionist who recommends it for adult horses of any age, and I've done just that for many years. Why do you think you need to feed supplements? The feed you are providing includes all of the nutrients she needs. If you are feeding her a good quality grass hay for the long stem fiber, that is all the better for her health. Never feed a supplement unless your vet has diagnosed a deficiency that requires supplemenation. If you have specific concerns on medical issues, your vet is the one who should be advising you. I'm wondering if there is a problem that prompted you to ask this question?

call your vet. we know nothing about your horse besides that she is 18. does she have joint issues? weight issues? digestive issues? hoof issues? do you want to use a daily wormer or a bi monthly wormer? how much work are you doing with her? what suppliments was she on in the past? depending on her weight and her ability to chew, senior feed might not be necessary. purina is usually good about emailing you back about nutrition questions. Your vet would know what your horse needs better than anyone on Y!A, and will give you suggestions on what brands to use as well.

Wow, okay. Since you obviously need a lot more help than we can give, and since you don't find it necessary to give any more info than that, I would suggest getting professional help. Sooner rather than later.

Ask someone at the barn that you know has experience with horses.

How old is this horse, Purina Senior feed is for very old horses who have very few teeth left. She should not need Senior Feeds for another 8 to 10 years, have her teeth checked and floated if needed and I would put her on a 12% complete pellet and all the hay she can eat and fresh water, unless she has some sort of medical problem she does not need all the supplements, just a mineral supplement which you can buy in the bag from the feed store, and she may need a sulfur block which has both sulfur and salt. That is what I fed my mare until she died at 30 years old.

You need to get her teeth checked since her teeth need to be in good order to process and chew her food properly. I would give her bran and also flax seed oil in her feeds in order to help her joints and improve her coat. The bran is bulk and also keeps her "regular". You might give her a bit of sugar beet pulp if she needs to keep some weight, and joint supplements. If you are still in doubt, take length and height measurements and the measurements around her girth - and some photographs from front back and sides to the feed merchants along with details of what work she is doing and they will advise.
