What does Britain gain economically from membership of the EU?
-
I read that membership of the EU costs Britain 65 billion (Bruges Group, 2008). At first I thought this meant that the government paid in 65 billion which they could have spent on better things but when I looked into it, the government only paid in 14.8 billion, quite a small fraction of the budget. 28 billion of it was what businesses spent to comply with EU regulations, 3.3 billion was the value of the catch lost when other countries were allowed to fish in our waters, and 17 billion was additional food costs resulting from the common agricultural policy. Now I am wondering if anybody can tell me what Britain gains economically from being in the EU? Do businesses somehow make that money back? Is anything cheaper to buy? etc Also, this might be relevant: how does the superior bargaining power of the EU on the world stage benefit Britain?

Answer:
Bankruptcy! Britain would do better to pull out of the EU altogether. We wouldn't have stuffed shirts in Brussels telling us what laws we need to make! We wouldn't get told to harbour a convicted terrorist (convicted in Jordan) because to send him to Jordan would be a breach of his human rights! We wouldn't have stuffed shirts telling us how, when or how much trade we can do with the rest of Europe. Switzerland is not in the EU but she fairs just as well if not better than member states of the EU. She doesn't have stuffed shirts in Brussels dictating to her about policies etc. Britain wouldn't have to spend a fortune on membership fees of an organisation that in my opinion is a waste of time and space. Not to mention waste of money. Look at the Euro currency it is in a shambles thanks to the likes of Greece and Italy. Reply: I know you didn't ask whether or not Britain should leave the EU, but in my opinion Britain would save money by not contributing towards the membership of the EU. The savings would give us more money in our coffers to do things for the people of Britain and not the EU as a whole. Why should Britain contribute towards a vastly corrupt organisation? We can sell our goods like any other country that is in the locale of the EU but not part of the EU. Switzerland is a prime example of this. By not being part of the EU will bring other benefits not just economically, but socially as we would have laws for BRITAIN and not for the EU! (Just one example where the EU has interfered with the running of Britain)

Nothing, we would be better off out of the EU. Britain, like Germany, is a net contributor to the EU, something some of the other countries should remember more often. If we left I doubt very much whether Europeans would stop buying British goods the same as we wouldn't stop buying theirs. However, we would regain control of our borders, regain control of our fishing grounds and would no longer be subject to the wasteful common agricultural policy. We could also govern ourselves and reduce red tape affecting business, the government would be free to take whatever measures it saw fit to attract inward investment from the rest of the world. I think life would be a lot better.

Within the EU - no tariffs, US and Japan etc all have to pay tariffs to import into the EU. Withing the EU - the same rights as every company in the EU without needing the approval of each countries regulators Within the EU - each consumer the same rights, regardless if he is from that EU country or somewhere else Within the EU - work permit permanent instant without any costs, you just work whereever you go and so on and on and on Monetary: difficult to quantify Common agricultural policy: UK farmers and fishermen receive subsidies from the EU and are allowed to fish in other countries waters Food costs have come down in the UK since their are no import tariffs on vegetables etc from the EU. Protection of Consumers - all EU suppliers have to abide by the same rules and can not produce shoddy goods

A good question! The EU is by far the biggest market we have for British exports. How that compares to our net contribution to the EU for the "privilege" of belonging is anyone's guess.
