Should I go to the job?

Should I be suspicious because of the way I was released, let go from my seasonal job at Target? I was let go?

  • on December 17th of last year, it was only a seasonal job for me, but from what i've heard, is that when people get hired for a seasonal job around the holidays, usually they are released, let go, laid off, whatever, until the first or second week of January, or after Christmas, but I was released, let go, on December 17th, like a week before Christmas. Target was my first ever job in retail, customer service, i was there for almost 2 months, my date of Orientation there was was October 25th of last year, and it took a long time to get cleared for Orientation because my Job Interview there was October 12th of last year, so it took 2 weeks for my Drug Test and Background Check results to get processed through. Because this is what someone told me: "It's very fishy that a seasonal employee was let go before the Christmas rush was over. Seasonal employees are hired strictly for the black Friday and Christmas shopping rushes. Only a few of our seasonal employees weren't kept on and they were let go the second week of January. There might be more behind your release than you think and I would check before including that job on your application/resume. The short time frame can also be a red flag for employers." I had perfect attendence at Target, I was never late, i was always on time, but i was not given the option, the choice to stay, and i've been struggling to get a new job since then. I've had 4 job interviews since last January of this year, but no luck getting hired, for a very long time i was unable to even get a job interview, but lately i've been getting them, but still, i'm kinda curious as to why Target released me, let me go early, like I wonder why I was not released, let go during the first or second week of January, I was not the only seasonal employee that got released, let go, others were to but some were after me. I spoke to people in Target's Human Resources Department, I asked them if I could use, list them as a Reference and they said Yes, but something tells me they were not completely honest with me behind my release, lay off from there, they told me it was nothing personal, all a Business Decision, but i get the feeling there is more behind my release than it seems.

  • Answer:

No you should not be suspicious about the way you were released unless you actually did something to jeopardize your job while you were there. Seasonal employees are short term for the most part. It's not suspicious that they let you go before Christmas. It could strictly be a financial matter where the district manager told them to eliminate X number of workers from your store. A short time frame is not a red flag when it's a seasonal position. The unemployment rate is very high due to the economy. It's not surprising that you have had no luck getting hired since January. There are tons of unemployed and underemployed individuals competing for a very limited number of jobs. Unless you're an ideal candidate, you will not get hired. You should accept the fact that your seasonal job did not last as long as you'd hoped for. The individual that told you it was fishy that you were let go does not sound like a nice person. You should not value anything he/she says.

I agree that the timing is a little weird - I've never worked for Target but it's pretty uncommon for seasonal employees to be let go before Christmas. But there could be some perfectly normal explanations, like if they just hired too many people. I doubt anything shady is going on, unless there's something you didn't discuss here. The short time frame will definitely be a red flag for future employers. Unfortunately you'll probably never find out exactly why you were let go so it may be tough to explain this to future employers. When you talked to HR did you ask if you were eligible for rehire?
