What do you say when calling to check up on a job application?
-
It has been a week since I have submitted some of my applications. I have heard that it is great to wait a week and then call to check back because it shows you want the job. Anyways, what are you supposed to say when you call? I know you ask to speak to the manager but then what? Would you just say "I submitted a job application about a week ago and I was calling to check up on my application" or "I submitted a job application about a week ago and I was calling to see where my application stands" or "I submitted a job application about a week ago and I was calling to see where my application stands"? Or would you just say something completely different? Thank you so much for all answers and God bless! (:

Answer:
When calling back about an application, the way you phrase it has to be polite and professional. I would say something like: "Hi, my name is (place name) and i submitted an application about the (blank) position and I'm calling to see if the position is still available." This is what I usually say when i haven't been called for an interview, it shows the employer that you're interested in working for them, lets them know who you are, and gives them a good impression. They'll either tell you they're still deciding or that they have filled the position.

If you are able to I have always found it to be best to physically go back (usually 2-4pm during the slow times) and talk to them in person. If it is slow they should have time to retrieve your application, or like me you could have a simple one page info sheet that has all your information and contact information. Sometimes restaurants have a small cramped office and things tend to get lost or missplaced so that can come in very handy. Just calling is OK but I've always had good luck going face to face....if you still just want to or have to call then I would try to call 2-4pm Tuesday-Thursday (slow(er) time) I would try to be specific (if you can remember)... I submitted my application last Monday and haven't heard anything yet, I just wanted to touch bases with you and make sure the job hadn't been filled yet. The conversation should progress from there. good luck
