I applied for my first job...how do I follow up?!?
-
Hello, I just applied for my first job. I applied at a nice restaurant, and the manager told me that unfortunately, we do not have any openings, but still took my application anyway. He told me that if there is an opening, they first go through the applications they have on file. Do I follow up to this? The only thing I could think of was to call and see if they have an opening, but I was confused as to when. Thanks!

Answer:
He has politely brushed you off, though perhaps just for the time being. There is no need to follow up on this as you have not actually applied for a job, merely signified your readiness to work in that particular establishment if ever a place becomes available. The best you can hope for is that if there is an opening in the future then the restaurant will still have your CV/application and call you in for an interview. There is no certainty however that the restaurant will have kept your CV and people who already work there will recommend their friends etc. So my advice is to apply to as many places as possible for your best chance of getting an interview.

Since you have no experience you'd probably have better luck applying at a fast food restaurant like McDonalds, KFC, Taco Bell. I don't think you need to follow up on this one.

You can follow up again in a couple of weeks and in the meantime keep applying at other places
