How long does it take to become a pharmacy technician in nyc?

New York currently has no licensure regulations for pharmacy technicians. I always recommend people to look at help wanted ads in their area to see what employers are requiring of their applicants. Although there is no licensure regulations, some employers may prefer to hire people who have gone through training and/or who are certified. If you decide to go through a training course, it can take as little as 2-3 months (if you work on it full-time) or 5 months (devote 15 hours per week). Most training is self-paces which means you work on it at your own pace. That is why it varies. Pay. I don't have data specifically for NY but this is what I do have: The US Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics includes pharmacy technicians in a group called Pharmacy Technicians and Aides. According to their 2010-11 Occupational Handbook the median annual wage of pharmacy technicians was $27,705 in May 2008. The middle 50% earned between $22,776 and $33,030 and the highest 10% earned more than $39,478. The top 3 pharmacy technician employers are health and personal care stores, hospitals, and general merchandise stores. These different employers offer varying pharmacy technician salaries: health and personal care stores pay an average of $27,910 a year, hospitals pay an average of $33,160 a year, and general merchandise stores pay an average of $26,720 a year.

I do recommend at least getting your national certification through PTCB while you look for someone to give you a job. The PTCB will help you land a job and give you a nice foundation of pharmacy knowledge.
