Can a registered pharmacist work as a pharmacy technician?
-
My dad is a registered pharmacist in MA with his license and all his continuing ed. up to date, although he's over 65. He worked for a bigger pharm co. that serviced nursing homes and hospitals, but just last week was "asked" to retire. He still wants to work and is bored/depressed at home, but would like to work only part-time, doing something more low-key. Can he become a part-time pharm. tech., since he's already a registered, licensed pharmacist?

Answer:
Not sure if he is interested, but he should be able to find an adjunct instructor position or online adjunct instructor position as well for certain classes if he is interested in teaching.

He could but he may not be happy doing it. He would only be paid a few dollars and he would be very very busy--many pharm techs work the patooties off as places like CVS promise a Rx in an hour. He might do better looking for a PT job teaching in a pharm tech program, or in a similar capacity at a health care school-he should think outside the box a bit.

Yes he can work as a pharmacy tech but they don't make much money! All he needs to do is apply to another pharmacy such as the big name retail ones like CVS and Walgreens. They would be happy to hire your father as long he is still of sound body and mind. That is rude that they want him to retire. Don't have him apply to be a pharmacy tech! That would be a big step DOWN for him! Just tell him to apply to CVS, Walgreens and other local retail pharmacies and other hospital pharmacies! Pharmacies are always looking for experienced licensed pharmacists...especially in retail!
