Why are there so many people angry about nursing?

  • I'm a senior in high school and lI'm starting nursing school in the fall. I came across allnurses.com basically nursing community, so I read through the message boards a lot and there are a lot of bitter people..just very negative about nursing, Like it's a large amount and and it's kind of discouraging because they make it seem like hell , claim the demand for nurses is a lie and there are no jobs. I don't know if I should take it with a grain of salt because if youre angry you';re most likely to go online and complain versus enjoy it, right? and that website doesn't hold the whole nursing population. Just wondering.. http://allnurses.com/general-nursing-discussion/potential-nursing-students-687654.html

I noticed that about that forum too, and I agree, people who are unhappy are more vocal about it online. I will say that the situation with nursing right now is variable across the country. So there is pockets where jobs are scarce for whatever reason. New grads might have a harder time because of the lack of experience, but honestly, I think there are probably more jobs available than people are willing to admit. They are just jobs that few people want to take because it isn't their ideal work setting or specialty or it's working nights or whatever. Sometimes you have to take whatever is available just to get some experience under your belt or get your foot in the door of a larger health care company. I will also add that the nursing shortage IS a very real thing that is going to get worse in the next 10+ years. Look at it logically. The population of older people, the Baby Boomers, is the largest age group in our population. They are hitting retirement age. Older people = more health problems. Also, more older people = more older nurses in the profession than younger, and more nurses are going to be retiring than there are new grads coming in, creating a deficit. Also, look at the health of our nation, obesity is affecting a huge proportion of our country and it's getting worse, so we see a rise in diabetes, heart disease, cancer, and all kinds of other conditions associated with that, and at younger ages. Nursing programs simply cannot put out enough new grads to meet the needs of the community. There are a limited number of nurse educators, mostly due to the education required to teach and the debt burden is large compared to the small salary you make so incentives to teach nursing are few. Also, schools have limited physical space for skills practicums and labs, and there are limited sites in the community to perform clinicals in a safe way that does not negatively impact the working environment of the clinical sites. And finally, if Obama's new health care laws stick, more people will finally have access to medical insurance and will be seeking more health care in the primary setting (clinics), where nurses and especially nurse practitioners will be in high demand. So if you add all that up, nurses are going to be set. If you are passionate about what you do, work hard, the world is open to you when you get a degree in nursing. There are so many diverse work opportunities if you just go for it. You can further your education once you find the specialty you really love. Don't listen to the Debbie Downers who are just burnt out and probably work in some toxic work environments that they are too afraid to leave. Good luck.

Yup; the people who are most likely to post something (whether it is about customer service or about their job) are the ones who are unhappy. Nursing is a great career, and I wish you the best.

Well, some of it is the jobs aren't where people are graduating. You'll have to move where the jobs are. Some also do not have the experience in healthcare or can't market themselves. In my area, they hire part-time because we have a ton of nursing schools. We have about ten LPN schools and about 8 RN schools. They know they can get another nurse if something happens. A lot of nurses become bitter and angry. They are overworked and not enough time to do everything. Patients aren't always happy and cheery.

It's not that the nurses on allnurses are bitter or angry.Allnurses is a place for nurses to vent and look for support when they have had a bad day. No one understands like another nurse.Talking to family just doesn't cut it.It doesn't mean they don't love being nurses. It just means that everyone has bad days.Nursing is a great career but it can be stressful and difficult. Yes currently nursing jobs are difficult to find.
