Best way to become an RN, PLEASE HELP!?

  • I was planning at going to my local community college and going to their RN program. I met with the counselor, and he said after taking 2 years ALL of my prerequisites I could be on waiting list to get into the RN Program there for YEARS. This doesnt sound like all that good of a plan... So I was curious, would it be faster to sign up for an LVN program, finish that, then apply to an LVN to RN program? And if you are going to got to an LVN to RN program can you go straight into the program or are there prerequisites that you have to take? I'm so confused on this whole situation ! please help!

    Some of the LVN to RN programs have waiting lists and have the same amount of pre-reqs. The school I am at, I waited a year and a half to get into the RN program and the waiting list for LVN to RN is about a year. However, the RN waiting list at my school seemed biased since I waited less than 2 years whereas some people waited 2 or 3 years. You will have the same stuff as the normal RN program usually. It will just be a shorter time in the actual nursing classes. So plan on biology, nutrition, etc.

Lauren, let's look at this critically. If the wait list for nursing school is potentially 3+ years, what does this tell you? That there are tons of students that are becoming nurses. What does this mean? That there is a possible glut of new graduates taking jobs. What does THIS mean? That by the time you get done in 5-7 years, the jobs may be hard to come by. Yes, healthcare is a growing field, but if all the schools are maxed out with waiting lists and all the jobs want experienced nurses, you could have a problem with supply & demand. For you, if you plan on staying in the area, yes, an LVN program might be the way to go. You can then work to get experience so that when the RN program opens up, you can get in, get out, and get a job ASAP. IF places are still hiring at that point. You might also want to look into NP - it's going to be a HUGE field as they become more trained and more utilized in clinic and hospital settings.
