What are some other majors similar to nursing?

Should I continue nursing? What are some other majors similar to nursing? Please read this, I really need help?

  • I am just asking in case I don't get into the nursing program. I really, really want to be a nurse although it's really hard to get in (as any would know if they had tried to or are in it). Though, I kind of wish I knew about all the trouble I was getting myself into :( Other things I am interested in are: health and healthcare, biology, most sciences (except chemistry!), I don't like math at all besides basic math (though I've taken many years of it already up to Calculus in High school :/ ), social sciences like psychology and the mind, but I'm also liked sociology when I took it. I have been considering Counseling (so that's why I mentioned the psych ans sociology) and also I've been wanting to be a teacher for such a long time in my life but decided not to since I'm just too afraid to go in front and teach, despite that I like explaining concepts and am pretty good at it(I've tutored for biology and science classes like anatomy and those I'm good at) So that's why it's really hard for me choosing otherwise. I have been good at many science classes the nursing requires, besides Microbiology which is the ONLY class I failed unfortunately. However, nursing has just been so stressful and hard for me I don't know if it's worth it anymore and I doubt I'll get in anymore. (By the way, my cumulative GPA is 3.24 and the nursing program at my school requires a 3.5) That's just too much. Doesn't anyone else agree? I'm considering applying elsewhere but sometimes am just not sure nursing is worth it anymore. I mean I know it is since it pays well and provides good security and benefits in the job and I don't want to pass all that up, but the stress and pressure it has caused me and will include if I do get in any program is what's really bothering me now and making me reconsider. Honestly, I just don't know. Plus I hate how so many people are so rude and bitchy in nursing and don't know if I even want to be part of that anymore. Initially, I came into nursing for the right reasons since i wanted to help and take care of people and do something in my life that could benefit others and provide me a good future. I really liked the fact that nursing has so many good benefits like healthcare which I need considering I'm a diabetic. But that's what also has been worrying me since it's really stressful. Before, I just kept ignoring that and looked at the big goal but I know I need to consider a job that's better for my health and not so stressful. So these are the main reasons I'm reconsidering nursing a major. However, the main points i want to stay other than all the benefits it can provide me, is that I've been doing so much work so far to get a BSN and be a RN. It's taken me 3 years so far.Plus my parents have helped me out financially alot and they do want this for me, so I don't know if I can afford starting all over (but please dont consider that for the major you think I should so since I do plan to take loans and all whatever is necessary). Sorry for writing so much! I just really need the advice now and am pretty lost in what to do. Yeah I know most people I have asked so far told me to just stick it out and continue nursing but for me, it seems the cons may outweigh the pros in my case. But I don't think I want to continue nursing anymore. I'm just so tired of it and the stress it comes with (and I'm just doing the prereqs so imagine the program). So that's why I'm really unsure. At heart I want to be a nurse but to study it is too hard :( So what are some other possible good majors for me considering this? Anything else I should mention, please let me know! Thanks. @Jill: I apologize for re-asking it's just I've been so worried about this lately. I had a big feeling someone here would say just what you said, and I want to say I am glad you did mention that. So I want to at least thank you for saying that. Maybe it's just too much stress but like I've been telling myself before, in the end it's probably worth it. What I'd like to know is now that you're a nurse, do you ever feel like it's similar to working on the clinics? I keep hearing that's the hardest part so I'm not really looking forward to it. But I guess I keep going by what everyone else says. It's kinda discouraging. And about the "bitchy nurse" part, I didn't mean it like that! I know there are so many nice, decent nurses (like in any job) that actually do it because they love it! I know that. That's why I was thinking to be a nurse. Not for all the bad reasons like just for the money (which I know lots of nursing students

I think I answered your other question last night and I'm gonna tell you the same thing: if your heart is really in it, you will do what you have to do to tough it out. Yes, nursing school is stressful. For some people it is worse than others. I would say if you are capable of getting a 3.24 you are capable of getting a 3.5, all it would take is taking a couple of extra classes that are "easy" and it will boost up your GPA. What concerns me is a couple of things. First, being so short sighted. This stress is temporary, and also, you're kidding yourself if you think that choosing any other field is going to be a walk in the park. No matter what you decide to major in, it's gonna take some decent effort. I know you're working hard now, I'm not minimizing that. But putting in just a little more might make all the difference. I don't see how your cons outweigh the pros based on anything you've said here. I think that either you're just being negative and feeling discouraged and depressed because you're stressed out (which happens to EVERY pre-nursing and nursing student at some point), or, your heart really isn't in it and you should cut your losses. I also didn't appreciate your stereotyped belief that nurses are b*tchy and catty. I think that's a myth. There are excellent, respectful, helpful nurses out there who want others to succeed, and there are nurses who are burnt out and shouldn't be nurses anymore. You can choose to allow yourself to be treated like dirt, or you can be assertive when this kind of behavior happens and call them out on their disrespectful and unprofessional behavior. Sounds to me more like you're just trying to talk yourself out of it and trying to justify your decision to change paths. And I guess that's ok if that is what you really want. The hard work of nursing school pays off longer term, I said that before. Once you're licensed, there are SO many opportunities available to you in so many specialties, job settings, etc. I don't think that you would be unhappy once you made it through this temporary situation of having to work hard and be stressed out. Do you have any friends in college who are pre-nursing like you? Someone you can vent your frustrations and find support from? I don't know. I've said all I can. I love my chosen profession despite the fact that I, too, wanted to quit on almost a weekly basis while I was in my initial licensure program. I was miserable. But it was SO worth it and it felt so good at the end to know that I stuck with it when it was challenging to do so. Good luck with your decision.
