Should I do a ropes course?
-
I just had surgery two weeks ago and I have stitches on the 6 separate incisions on my stomach (which hurt under pressure or even from the waistband of my pants). My high school class is going to a ropes course next week, do you think it's a good idea to participate? It involves jumping off/hanging from trees and climbing ropes while being suspended by a harness. Seems like too much physical activity... I don't think my parents would let me back out of it but I'm pretty worried about 6 hours of that. I don't want the stitches to be yanked, either! The two days before are also supposed to be set aside for camping and hiking with the class.. I don't know about that either. I don't know how comfortable I feel being far away from medical help at home if I need it. Thoughts? Should I stick it out? How can I tell my parents I would rather not do these? Any kind of advice will do.

Answer:
Dan F has it right on. 3wks is not long enough for these sorts of incisions to heal well enough for this sort of activity. Get a note from your doc. Something like this usually requires 6wks for proper healing to be sure that you wont tear out your stitches. -Good luck

ABSOLUTELY NOT! That kind of activity uses a lot of your core muscles and you WILL hurt yourself and your recovery. Talk to your school nurse and I'm sure they will tell you that you cannot participate. Then you can tell your parents that they won't let you. That's too bad because it sounds like a fun activity, but there is plenty of time to do those things after you are completely healed. Good luck to you and speedy recovery!

Meet with your surgeon as soon as possible (ASAP)! Describe to her/him what is expected of you during this outing. He/she knows what you will be capable of doing. BE SURE to get any limitations or restrictions in writing. Nearly every surgeon should be happy to do so!
