What are growth hormones?

What age are cows slaughtered that have been given growth hormones?

  • I would like to find out what age cows and pigs if you have that information or any animal for that matter that they get eaten when they are fed hormones to increase their growth versus ones that are fed naturally or at least aren't given any growth hormones. I would think that this would be really easy to find online but I have been having such a hard time finding the time difference. Thank you and have a great day, Jen

As this is a question posted in the UK only section it is against the law for any animals to have growth hormones so this question despite being asked on UK section does not apply. Animals that go to slaughter range in age, the bulk of them once they reach maturity go to slaughter and also cast animals will go to slaughter once they get to that golden age where it all goes down hill. Hugo is wrong females as well as males will go to slaughter not all animals will suit for breeding and will later in life go to slaughter. Not all cows are dairy that go to slaughter we have beef cattle as well so again both males and females will go. Some are slaughtered for different food chains so the likes of cast stock and the likes of bullocks will go to the cheap end and other good quality stock goes to good quality food. As for forced and natural growth you can be sure anything branded free range/organic will mean that the animals feed naturally and slowly reared. ADDITION: Only healthy animals are slaughtered, all over the UK we have RSPCA inspectors in markets and slaughter houses to assure fair treatment to animals and if they are in good health for slaughter or they are sent back. Unhealthy animals the owner has to pay to get culled and disposed of.

Cows are not slaughtered for meat. They are kept for dairy. When they are too old they are often sent for animal food. Bullocks are castrated bulls and as such don't need growth hormones, these are the beef animals. Pigs I don't know about.
