Should Independence Day be changed?
-
I watched a show on the History channel and it was about Independence day. It said that its actually celebrated on the wrong day because everyone voted for independence on July 2nd and on July 8th the Declaration of Independence was read to the public for the first time. My teacher told be that my show must have been wrong but I was still interested. After doing some research I read that the date on the Declaration of Independence was July 4th because that's when it went through its final edit. But if independence was voted for on the 2nd wouldn't it make more sense to celebrate it on the 2nd or even the 8th? Is there a reason it's still celebrated on the 4th? Sorry if this is a stupid question but I'd really like to know.

Answer:
July 2, 1776 is the day that the Continental Congress actually voted for independence. John Adams, in his writings, even noted that July 2 would be remembered in the annals of American history and would be marked with fireworks and celebrations. The written Declaration of Independence was dated July 4 but wasn't actually signed until August 2. Fifty-six delegates eventually signed the document, although all were not present on that day in August.

At this point it is celebrated on the Fourth because of tradition. We are over 200 years old now, and the celebration has been going on for almost that whole time...so it's a little late to change now. My understanding is that the news didn't reach everyone until the 4th, so that was the day decided upon by the Continental Congress as the Official Day of In dependance. Like many other holidays, it was man made, but let it stand at this point. It is more the What than the When that is important anyway.

It's not stupid; that's actually very interesting. I still think it should be on July 4 because that's when it was finalized. But I see where you're coming from. It's just a day someone picked. Many holidays could have been on different days, when you think about it.
