How do you start homeschooling in NC?

Can you start homeschooling at any time of the year?

  • Hi guys i'm wondering if it's possible to me to start homeschooling at this part of the year. I know it's March, and we only have like 2 more months of school left but public school really isn't working out for me. I have 35+ kids in all my classes and 2/3 won't stop talking during class & I can't concentrate no matter how hard I try. I also play 2 different varsity sports, and have 4 hours of homework a night, on a good day. Basically i'm constantly running on 4 hours of sleep a night. So is it possible for me to start homeschooling now? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

  • Answer:

Depends on how you plan to do it and where you live. Since laws vary from one state to the next, you'll want to check on the laws you'll have to follow. In most states, you simply withdraw from your school and then you might have to notify the school district that you are homeschooling. In such cases, sure you can start homeschooling any time. But there are a few states that require you to first submit curriculum or do other steps before you can start homeschooling; you can still likely start any time, but it might take a while to go through the required steps. Another consideration is *how* you plan to homeschool. If you plan to homeschool in a traditional manner, getting books of your own to use (or even using library books or certain online resources), then you can start anytime you want. If you plan to use a virtual school or other online or correspondence school, then starting this late in the year could be a big problem as they may want you to start the entire year (or at least the second semester) over again. Look up you local homeschool laws. And find a local homeschool support group to help you get anwers. You can start looking for one on Yahoo! Groups.

Yes, assuming you're actually homeschooling. If you enroll in the public-school-at-home "virtual academies," you'll have to put up with whatever inane rules they decide to implement. www.wagnerweb.org/Homeschool_101
