How do actors/actresses do sex scenes?

Is nudity necessary for sex scenes?

  • In the role I'm doing, they asked me if I'd be willing to do nudity, and I said I would if it wasn't gratuitous and if it was important for the plot, to move the story along, and they said that was fine. Anyway, now I've read the script, the bit where I've got to get naked is during the sex scene. The scene is quite explicit and my butt will be shown a lot in it. Except I think it's completely unnecessary, as they can depict us having sex without all the nudity. I'm fine with doing nude scenes when it's important, and I've done many before, but this scene just seems gratuitous. They stretch the scene out and have me naked for ages for no reason. I talked to the director about it and he kind of laughed and said "Of course you have to be naked, it's a sex scene", but I've seen lots of sex scenes before where they don't show actual nudity in them. Is it really necessary for my butt to be shown so much in this scene? Should I challenge him again about it, or should I just do it anyway? I'm fine with doing nude scenes normally, just in this one I feel like I'm doing it just so the viewers can stare at me naked for 5 minutes. It just seems pointless.

  • Answer:

Nudity is necessary because the director wants the audience to see you nude. They want you to stay naked so that the audience can spend some time looking at your naked body. Yes, you should do it.

If you are ok with sex scenes, you are OK with nudity. But all nude and sex scenes are gratuitous and not really needed in a film unless it is porn. Thousands of films are done without sex and nudity, or where it is only suggested rather than depicted.

Nudity isn't necessary for sex scenes, nor is sex necessary for nudity scenes. But it isn't your place to write or direct. If you don't want to do it, say so, let someone else do it and risk not being given choice roles in the future.

The bottom line is: If you're uncomfortable, decline the role. The worst possible thing is to accept the role and then disrupt filming because you realize - after photography has started - that you don't want to do the scene as written. You declared your terms "Fine if it's not gratuitous" - you apparently feel it is gratuitous, so decline the role. It's as easy as that. "Is it necessary for my butt to be shown"... It's NOT YOUR DECISION TO REWRITE THE SCRIPT! Until you're at the level where they get a green light based on your name being attached to the project, you only have two real choices - take the role or don't. It's pretty clear that you're not right for this role, and this film... they're looking for an R rating (US) or 15 (UK) and have budgeted and based their distribution model on that. Gratuitous means different things to actors and producers...
