What is a bivouac tent?

Old tent leaks, is there a way to fix this?

  • We are going our first tent camping next weekend and were given this big old Quictent family camping tent. The tent is nice and big, the kids camped out last night to try out but they had to wake up with rain in the tent this morning. The tent is leaking on the sides (the fabric is old, so it has weak spots). We wants to get a new tent but I wanted to know if we can use some kind of tarp to salvage this tent. Thank you in advance for your advice. This is the tent link:http://www.quictents.com/peaktop-camping-tent.html

I have a couple suggestions: one is to go to Home Depot or Lowe's and ask for some stuff that creates a water barrier, like a spray or something u wipe on the material. I am assuming that it isnt canvas, but if so, I think there is some stuff that is used specifically for canvas to make it water resistant. Hope for no rain for sure huh? Other suggestion is that you actually use a tarp and once u set up the tent just put the tarp over the existing tent and figure out a way to connect it to the tent (maybe clothes pins?) When we use to camp out, we actually had a tarp that had some type of piping legs that stuck into the ground. We put that up for an extra protection over the tent. Sometimes we also used that set up for a place to eat right outside the door of the tent. It also gave us a place to put extra stuff like coolers, grill, etc, so we had more room in the tent. I am just giving these details because it wouldnt be a waste of money to get something like that for use when camping even if/when u get a new/newer tent. If you absolutely have to replace the tent, have u thought about trying craigslist for a second hand tent? I have gotten lots of great stuff very reasonably priced from there.

We used to proof our canvas tent each year with a product called Mesowax. This was wax in a petroleum like suspension that you just applied with a broad brush to the outside of the canvas (once the tent was erected, of course) and allowed to dry. Never had any leaks!

Silicon spray,

There is a special spray to put on it to water proof it and then use a tarp to be on the safe side. Try Dunhams for the spray.

A leaky camping tent will create a very uncomfortable sleeping situation on a camping trip. Making repairs to the tent is possible in the field if you carry a repair tent. Repairs may also be made in the home to ensure they are not rushed and are properly completed. Most tents will spring leaks at the seams and the size of leak will increase as repairs are postponed. Make the repairs immediately to prevent the leak from growing out of control. Things you may need:Wet rags, seam sealer,Paper towels and toothpicks. And steps below, *Erect the tent outside on a sunny day. Stake the tent to ensure it is safe from any sudden gusts of wind. Do not attach the rain fly to the tent. *Wipe down all of the exterior seams with a wet rag. The seams are easily located by the distinct stitching. Enter the tent and wipe down all of the interior seams. Be sure to clean the floor and window seams. *Open a tube of seam sealer and squeeze a thin amount of the sealant along the exterior of the seams. Start with the large seams and use toothpicks and paper towels to manage any spilling and overflow. Also hit the smaller seams that are accessible from the exterior. *Enter the tent and run a bead of sealer on the floor seams to ensure water runoff does not enter the tent. Use the toothpicks and paper towels to prevent spilling and to manage a clean line. Leave the tent in the sun for two hours to dry the sealant. *Attach the rain fly to the tent once the sealant is dry. Apply a bead of the sealant to the seams on the outside of the fly. Leave the camping tent in the sun for an additional two hours to dry. Remove the fly and disassemble the tent.
