What Is Osmosis And Diffusion?

9th Grade Biology: Osmosis & Diffusion?

  • I have a small quiz tomorrow on osmosis and diffusion. My teacher isn't really that good and doesn't know how to answer our questions. He tries but we are still left clueless. All I was given was a study guide and told that there was going to be a quiz -.- I'm looking for something that is at the point, easy for me to comprehend and thoroughly explained. These are the questions: *Describe what it means for a solution to be more concentrated than another solution, and compare the concentration of two solutions represented as diagrams *Explain what drives diffusion at the molecular scale *Explain what determines the direction that a substance diffuses across a membrane. *Predict how solutes and water will diffuse across a semi-permeable membrane in a given situation. *Predict how water will move across a membrane if a cell is placed in hypertonic, hypotonic, or isotonic solution. (Please describe each) *Compare and contrast how animal and plant cells respond to osmosis. *Describe why hydrophilic (polar and ionic) molecules do not easily cross a phospholipid bilayer. *Compare and contrast facilitated diffusion through carrier proteins and ion channels. Anything will be greatly appreciated. Thanks! :D

  • Answer:

Diffusion is the movement of something from higher concentration to lower concentration and osmosis is the diffusion of water.
