I have emptied all folders and messages, mail storage limit warning will not clear how do i fix this.

Do data files (personal folders or .pst) in Outlook 2003 have a space or storage limit?

  • I was told by our company's I.T. (phhhh...they're not that good) that I need to make multiple data files (personal folders or .pst) to "spread out the data" rather than using just one personal folder, since there's a space/storage limit on them. Is this true? If so, what is the limit (MB or GB)? If there is NO limit, then are there any consequences or drawbacks to having a large, single data file? Lastly, if there is no limit, what would you consider to be a safe storage mark to consider to constrain these drawbacks, if any? I'm using Windows XP, 4GB of RAM, and I have plenty of hard drive space (limitless since all files are saved on company network drive).

  • Answer:

I don't think there's a size limit to them, but they do tend to get unstable if they're over about 2 gig. It's better to create multiple .pst files and keep them smaller. They're hard to fix once they crash unless you have a good backup.

Outlook 2003 has a limit of 2 GB per PST file. Making multiple PST files is a pain. If anything use the autoarchive feature. My recommendation is upgrading to the latest, Outlook 2010 which has a huge PST file limit. Works better, faster, and freezes less.
