Do you have to connect aerial to built in freeview tv?

2 Built in Freeview TV won't pick up channels?

  • Roughly 2 years ago, I bought a TV with built in Freeview, I plugged in the antenna cable into the wall, I found a good number of channels and everything was fine. I stopped watching TV in my room for about a year and a half, and recently got a bigger TV with built in Freeview HD for Christmas. When I connect that one via antenna cable, no Digital channels can be found, I have tried numerous times and still no luck, but once it did pick up about 10 channels from ITV2 onwards, but this obviously wasn't good enough so I tried searching for more and lost those ones. To check it wasn't my new TV, I tried the freeview on my old one and it didn't work on there either, I have tried 3 different cables and checked the TV Ariel in the loft (which seems fine) and still no luck. Does anyone know what the problem is and how to fix it? (I live in SouthWest England and we have had the digital switch over)

    Your aerial is almost certainly the problem. It may look "fine" to a quick glance or perusal,but it must be absolutely perfect to pick up Freeview without difficulty. Loft aerials are not always very good for receiving digital television because the tiles reduce the television signal strength by nearly 50% when dry, and up to 80% when wet. This means that a loft aerial should be as large as possible and in good condition. If yours is less than 36 elements (the horizontal bars) then get a bigger one. As big as can fit in the space. First thing to check is the alignment. It must be pointing directly at the transmitter. Any deviation, however small, will reduce the received signal strength and quality significantly. Sometimes loft aerials droop a bit so that they can fit under a sloping roof. This drooping will also reduce your signal strength. Next check the cable terminal connection block. This is a small plastic box near the back end of the aerial. The connections must be perfect without any wetness, looseness, corrosion or spider webs. Check the whole of the cable run for damage or crushing. You say that you have tried 3 different cables.. do you mean that you've replaced the whole thing from the aerial to the telly? If you just mean that you've tried three different short 'jumpers' from a wall socket to the set then inspect the wall socket. It may have loose connections or a splayed centre pin. These sockets are cheap and simple to replace. Don't use the cheap and nasty thin jumper cables, get a decent one. Note that there is no such thing as a "digital aerial", whatever anybody says (especially aerial salesmen). It is just a meaningless term used by the ignorant, gullible (who pay extra for the label) and advertisers. ALL television aerials work in exactly the same way. The only difference between them is their sensitivity (ability to receive weak signals). Generally, the bigger the tv aerial then the better it will be at capturing the tv transmissions. The downside is that longer aerials are more directional and they must be pointed very accurately towards the transmitter. Sounds to me like you were picking up the analogue signal with your new telly. During the break, I would guess the switchover happened in your area. As you noticed, you can get digital through a normal aerial, but in most areas you'll need an upgrade. Check when switchover was in your area, and if I'm right, just get a good 'digital' aerial.
