Why does my low coolant light keep coming on?

Our 1995 Volvo 850 GLT's light for "check coolant" or something keeps coming up- why?

  • We have a '95 Volvo 850. A light started coming on today- it appears to be the "check coolant" or maybe "check radiator" light. But there is no way to check the coolant level in the radiator itself, only the overflow tank. Should I add more water to the overflow tank? What may be causing the light to come on? The temp gauge seems fine- it doesn't appear to be overheating (yet). But I don't want the car to overheat period. Do you know what may be causing this light to come on?

  • Answer:

check the radiator cap when not hot under pressure.open slowly with gloves or rag to first notch until pressure is released then add if needed.if ok, look for short in wire fron sensor to dash(Bare or shorted.Sensor may be o/a.

You should never add to the overflow. Only to the radiator itself. You're most likely low on coolant. Add a couple quarts and see if the light stays off.
