No, Israel has nothing to do with the names. The Gaza Strip is called such because it's a strip of land that surrounds the city of Gaza. The definite borders might be Israeli-influenced, but it also came about when Egypt took the section for themselves. The West Bank refers to the Jordan River. As in, the western bank of the Jordan. It used to be a part of CisJordan, like other areas.

The so called "Palestinian territories"are areas that: 1) Jordan invaded in 1948,when Israel was reborn. They occupied Judea and Shomron .They annexed the Old City and Eastern parts of Jerusalem including the Jewish Mount of Olives and Mount Scopus with the Hebrew University. They expelled every Jew from the areas they occupied, and did not allow access for the next 19 years. They destroyed the entire Jewish Quarter of Jerusalem and used the area in front of the Western Wall for garbage. All settlements were destroyed.Jewish property taken over by Arabs. The Arab legion ,Jordan's Army was headed by Brig.Gnl John Glubb, and well armed and trained by British Officers, all paid for by Britain. The are they occupied was not called by it's Hebrew names but called the West Bank which extended from the borders of Jordan to within about 9 miles of the Mediterranean Sea. 2) Gaza which was occupied by the Egyptian Army that also initially penetrated deep into Israel, but was driven back to the Gaza Strip. In 1949 Israel and the Arab states agreed to a cease fire line, which remained until 1967 when Israel liberated all the foreign occupied land west of the Jordan River. The local Arab population which had been living in these occupied areas until liberated, first started calling themselves Palestinians. From about 1970 they started negotiating for a state in these previously occupied territories. They started referring to these areas as Palestinian ,although they had never been part of any autonomous Palestinian territory. Israeli governments at the time started negotiations to give the bulk of these lands to the Arabs, now called Palestinians. The so called "land for peace"negotiations. These secular leaders were even prepared to give away portion of Jerusalem,Israel's Capital since the time of King David 3,000 years ago. Palestinians rejected these very generous terms, and instead started a campaign of suicide bombing . Israel withdrew from Gaza and it became a base for constant barrage of Iranian and Syrian missiles against it's citizens. The war by Palestinians caused a change in Israeli thinking ,reflected by a change in Government. Israel now realized it must secure it's own borders and that negotiations would be dependent on peace. Israel has encouraged resettlement of towns and villages and new housing in Judea which Palestinians did not previously settle. The final borders of the Palestinian territories are now matters for discussion,in an atmosphere of peace ,whenever this will occur.
