What kind of roller blades should I get?

Roller skate advice, which ones should I buy?

  • Im a 14 year old girl, and I love roller blading. I tried out roller skating at a rink and I loved it! I want to join roller derby, but there is currently no junior league where I live. I am planning on joining when I am 18 though! I got advice from one of the coaches of a roller derby team here and she said that I could get some roller skates and go out to seawalls and rinks and anywhere I can to practice! I have $200 raised, and my parents will chip in for the rest. I am not sure what kind of roller skates to get though, I want to get a pair that I can also use for roller derby, if I can start up a club or league then I would already be used to derby skates and I would already have them. Or should I get recreational skates? IDK! If I do get a Fresh Meat Package (since I need a new set of protective gear anyways), will I be able to use the derby skates outside or just indoors? Thanks for any advice! I really want to get skating! Thanks!

    You can use the quads outdoors but you have to be a little more careful. The wide flat wheels will hit and want to stop suddenly from more debris than inline wheels. The short wheelbase makes them more prone to tipping forward (face plant) than the inlines. If speed is important to you, quads are a lot slower. I would look first if you will have a chance to actually do Roller Derby in the next 4 years. I suspect that the derby teams cannot let you practice with them because of liability issues since you are a minor. You might have to look at that issue if you want to create (possibly with the help of the adult league) a junior team. If you clear that up, you may be able to get the coach to help your team learn. If it looks like you will be able to get a junior team going or somehow get your parents to sign a contract with the adult league to let you practice with them, I would get advice from the women about what quads to get and get them. If it looks like it will be a few years till you can use them, I would consider staying on your inlines until you are close to where you can use the quads for derby.
